Do I need a permit to begin classroom lessons?

No permit is required to take sign up or begin the driver ed class. Our program is designe to assist with the knowlege needed to pass the written WY drivers test.  The student must be at least 14.5 years old by the first day of class unless they hold a hardship permit.

Does classroom have to be completed to start behind-the-wheel?

Yes. Once you have completed the class and have your permit, you can schedule your driving lessons through our website only after attendance is recorded for the 8 hour in person class.

Online Classroom

What is the cost for the 30 Hour online class

The 30 Hour online class is from an independent 3rd party, as such there is a nominal fee of $34.95 they charge for the use of their training sessions. 

We have reviewed the training and have approved this course as the only 30 Hours online class we accept for completion of our Driver-Ed program.  We hope to have a streamlined one payment needed on our site, but  for now, that fee is paid separately.

How long does it take to complete the online cass?

Because our 30-hour class is online, you may complete it at your own pace. It is broken into many sections that allow you to do one at a time, as your schedule allows. Most students complete the online class in 1-2 weeks.  

What happens after I complete the online program?

Once complete, you should be able to obtain a completion certificate that can be uploaded to our website after you register for a package.   If you have question about how to upload the certificate please email info@drivesmartwy.com

What is required to complete the driver education course?

In Wyoming, each driver education program must be approved by the state to qualify under state statute. Our program is approved with the following requirements:

  • 30 hours of online classroom instruction
  • 8 hours of in-person classroom instruction
  • 6 hours of behind-the-wheel observation
  • 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving
Can I just get driving lesson without the driver education course?

Yes. There are so many reasons someone may not wish to complete the approved driver education course but still have quality driving lessons. We offer private behind-the-wheel driving instruction as well as a manual transmission and trailer towing class.

What is the minimum age to start drivers ed?

You must be at least 14.5 by the first day of the driver ed class. The only exception is if you hold a hardship permit, which in Wyoming, you may obtain at the age of 14. If you qualify for this you may sign up at age 14. 

How long does it take to complete driver education?

The completion time depends on age, scheduling flexibility, and instructor availability. Typically, each student is done with the classroom portion and behind-the-wheel within 4-6 weeks.

Do I need a permit to start driver education?

No. Our program is designed to help you through the process of getting your Learner's Permit. Our 30-hour online classroom, 8-hour in-person, and FREE online practice test will help you succeed in getting your WY Learners Permit. Once you have your permit, you can sign up for behind-the-wheel lessons.

What is your refund policy?

Drive Smart WY, LLC does not offer refunds.  

Do you charge a cancellation fee or no show fee?

Yes, our instructors spend time preparing for classroom time or driving vehicles to pick-up locations; as such, the following fees apply:

  • A $50 fee will apply for all changes or cancellations made less than 48 hours before a lesson. This fee also applies if the student does not show up for a lesson or comes unprepared with required WYDOT equipment (glasses etc...)

Behind-The-Wheel

When can I start behind-the-wheel driving lessons?

You can start private driving lessons any time as long as you have a valid learner permit or driver's license. You can schedule private driving lessons on our website once you have registered and paid in full. If you are completing the drivers education course, you must complete the driver ed classroom portion before you can start behind-the-wheel lessons.

Can I choose a specific driving instructor?

Our scheduling software lets you see all available driving lessons and who is teaching them. If your preferred instructor is open, you can select them for a lesson.

Do you offer home pick-up and drop-off?

Currently, we do not. We have several locations available for pick-up and drop-off around town.

Will I have the same instructor for every lesson?

Our scheduling software lets you see all available driving lessons and who is teaching them. You may choose the same instructor for each lesson if they are open or try a different instructor.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my driving lesson?

Should you need to reschedule a lesson, you may do so by logging into your account on our website. You must cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a $50 late cancellation fee.

Can I use my own car?

No, our vehicles have safety features (passenger brake, passenger mirror, student driver signs, etc.) that don't come in standard cars.

Do I need my own car insurance for driving lessons?

Yes, we ask that you are added to an active policy at a minimum, as a permitted driver.  Typically persons 14 years or older are already added to the parents policy by default.  Please check with your insurance carrier for specific details.


How do I schedule behind-the-wheel lessons?

Log in to your student account on our website. Choose an available time and your preferred instructor from the calendar listed.  Sign-up may be restricted due to payment status or documents still need uploaded.  if you have questions please email info@drivesmartwy.com
